Fun With Chris and Jane

Our various adventures on California trails (and elsewhere)

A beautiful, cloudless day in Montana de Oro State Park, and our destination was 1,373′ Oats Peak. We hiked up the south side of the Islay Creek canyon to a saddle just east of Valencia Peak, thinking the next hill was Oats Peak. To our surprise, Oats was three small summits and another 3/4 mile away further east – the trail followed the undulating contours of the ridgeline, requiring a sequence of elevation gains and losses, but we got there eventually without too much additional effort. As we ate our customary lunch on top, the steep east face of Valencia Peak kept calling out to us, so we decided to tag its summit as well on the way back. After descending the Oats Peak trail to the saddle, we found the lateral trail, quite steep and overgrown in places, that ascends Valencia’s northeast shoulder. After reaching Valencia Peak’s summit for the third time (and enjoying both the best weather and views of our various visits here), we then descended to meet the Oats Peak trail again via a cutoff below Valencia’s west ridge.  No camera, only photos from Chris’ BlackBerry and Jane’s iPhone.

Over the last few years, we have discovered - or really, re-discovered - our common love of hiking. Although we typically enjoy the proverbial mountaintop experience and the sense of accomplishment that comes with reaching some summit or another, we sometimes prefer easier trips that are less taxing. In any case, we hope the visitor appreciates not just the natural beauty of the California areas to which we have been, but in some small way participates with us in the experience as well. We spend several weekends in Pismo Beach each year, so much of our hiking takes place on the Central Coast. We also like camping in the Sierras, so we've done several trips along the Great Western Divide and the Kern Plateau. Additionally, we have done a group hike (known as Chris and Jane's Excellent Adventure) with family and friends each Labor Day since 2009 - these trips are included in their own page. Finally, we recently purchased a cabin in Wrightwood, so many of our latest hikes have been in the eastern San Gabriel mountains. Enjoy the site!
