Fun With Chris and Jane

Our various adventures on California trails (and elsewhere)

May 23, 2020 – Blue Ridge East (2x)

We both woke up a bit sore from our outing yesterday, but we wanted to get a hike in anyway, if for no other reason than to get stiff muscles loosened up. We settled on going up the Blue Ridge trail near Mountain High, but by the time we got to the trailhead, it was full of cars and there was a large group get organized to start up the trail. We drove up Hwy 2, hoping that the road was open down to Vincent Gap so we could walk out to the Bighorn gold mine – no such luck, as the highway was gated at Grassy Hollow. So, we turned around and parked at Inspiration Point – there were several cars in the lot servicing the PCT westbound but only a couple more parked on the east side. We quickly determined to repeat another hike from 2015, a walk up the PCT to Blue Ridge campground, a little over two miles distant with 700′ of gain. We headed out right away, first breezing through a level section for about half a mile before starting a moderate climb through a shady grove of mountain oaks, followed by an open climb that got steeper the further we went – the open part in particular would have been quite warm were it not for a cool breeze that actually had us bundled up a bit despite the sunny day. The trail leveled off for a bit as we passed along the southern boundary of Mountain High’s west resort, after which we dropped into a shallow saddle followed by a significantly steeper slog up the ridge to the top of the resort. One more short descent followed by a longer uphill pitch brought us to the high point of the day, a softly rounded knob just west of the campground at 2 miles in. Here, we started seeing more people, having had the trail mostly to ourselves on the way up – while those on the PCT had kept their distance, folks here seemed less conscientious about social distancing and most had no masks. We kept our distance from the larger knots of hikers and found an unoccupied table somewhat removed on the east edge of the camping area, where we sat for about 15 minutes and ate a couple of Lenny and Larry’s Complete Cookies – good stuff. After we recrossed the high knob on the way back, we came to the Blue Ridge road – we could see another large, slower group ahead of us uphill on the trail, so we opted to walk the road back (actually a longer option than the trail, but more consistently graded – weird for us to prefer the road, though it turned out to be pleasant and largely vacant). We followed the road westward, meandering through the ski area (where some sizable snow patches remained) before dropping down to the last and very flat half mile, ultimately reaching Inspiration Point. The return walk verified for us that some brush we had found encroaching on the road a couple of summers ago has been cut back, such that we may try and drive up some time this summer to the road’s end at Guffy campground in order to hike some other remote locations at that end of the ridge.

Over the last few years, we have discovered - or really, re-discovered - our common love of hiking. Although we typically enjoy the proverbial mountaintop experience and the sense of accomplishment that comes with reaching some summit or another, we sometimes prefer easier trips that are less taxing. In any case, we hope the visitor appreciates not just the natural beauty of the California areas to which we have been, but in some small way participates with us in the experience as well. We spend several weekends in Pismo Beach each year, so much of our hiking takes place on the Central Coast. We also like camping in the Sierras, so we've done several trips along the Great Western Divide and the Kern Plateau. Additionally, we have done a group hike (known as Chris and Jane's Excellent Adventure) with family and friends each Labor Day since 2009 - these trips are included in their own page. Finally, we recently purchased a cabin in Wrightwood, so many of our latest hikes have been in the eastern San Gabriel mountains. Enjoy the site!
