January 29, 2023 – Monument Valley (UT/AZ)
Chris started working on a new project last fall, which required him to make a trip to the field location in southeastern Utah near Four Corners. Jane tagged along, and we hoped to get some time to see sights in the area. After spending the night in Kingman AZ, we got an early start and drove to Monument Valley, crossing briefly into Utah before entering the Navajo Tribal Park just back across the state line in Arizona. It was a beautiful, crisp day with some snow on the ground, which made the spectacular scenery all the more impressive. We had considered doing a short hike from the visitor center out toward the West Mitten, but the muddy trail conditions compelled us to do the 17-Mile Drive in the truck instead. We spent the next couple of hours navigating the slippery road as it weaves around and through the red rock formations, stopping frequently for photos and absorbing the grandeur and vastness of the area. Once we completed the loop, we stopped momentarily at the visitor center before heading further east on the highway to Forrest Gump Point, where one of the movie’s most famous shots was filmed. The January early sunset was near as we resumed the drive eastward through the San Juan River drainage, eventually reaching Cortez CO and a surprisingly-delicious burger at Denny’s. So happy to have made this very worthwhile side trip.
