Hello, world! We’re still here, just had to take six months off hiking to let Jane’s feet heal from a bad case of plantar fasciitis. Now ready to get back in the saddle, we were joined in Wrightwood for the weekend by Jane’s cousins, Jean and Janet. We had wanted to hike up Mt….

In Wrightwood for the first time since both our Yosemite trip and the concurrent Blue Cut fire that nearly reached the community, we were anxious to stretch our muscles that hadn’t seen much activity once we returned to our daily grind. We had discussed hiking the 7+-mile Waterman Mountain trail again but decided to…

Despite our deluxe apartment in the sky, Chris didn’t sleep very well. He chose to use the camp’s bed with its heavy wool sheet/blanket combo and comforter and woke up cold several times – Jane, on the other hand, slept in her bag atop the bed and was toasty warm all night. Apparently, one of us…

After our dinner at Merced Lake, we spent some time packing up our campsite – things were a little simpler since a) Jane had no wine left to stash in the campground bear box, and b) we had been allowed to get rid of at the HSC the small amount of garbage we’d been carrying,…

We again woke up pretty early, and we took advantage of our isolated camp site to start packing things up soon thereafter – so much for the best laid plans. As the sky started to brighten, we got up on some rocks above our home away from home for a clearer view of the meadow,…

Day 3 started with some coffee at our campsite while we waited for those around us to stir before packing up our stuff – the net result of that delay, however, was that we were not remotely ready to go before they blew the 7am conch shell summoning HSC guests to coffee, nor were…

Day 2 found us awake pretty early as neither of us had slept particularly well – temps had been in the 40s overnight, but perhaps the 20-degree sleeping bags we’d brought were a little too warm at this low elevation, especially during the first few nighttime hours when it was still quite toasty in…

Much as our hiking adventures in Maui three years ago centered around our walk through Haleakala’s crater, most of our various hikes this year have been oriented toward preparing for a six-day backpacking trip in the high country of Yosemite National Park. Until this year, Chris had done a handful of backpack excursions, but…

We decided to spend a couple of nights in Bishop on our way north to begin our Yosemite trip, so Sunday’s agenda called for a short hike to stretch our legs and tune up a little. We looked at literally dozens of options, in the end settling on a 5+-mile out-and-back exploration up the…

Family commitments and projects at home have conspired to keep us off the trails since our backpack trip in Sequoia, but we finally got a long weekend in Wrightwood with not many plans in it. Jane’s mom, Barbara, joined us for the weekend, and we wanted to do a short walk that would introduce…

Over the last few years, we have discovered - or really, re-discovered - our common love of hiking. Although we typically enjoy the proverbial mountaintop experience and the sense of accomplishment that comes with reaching some summit or another, we sometimes prefer easier trips that are less taxing. In any case, we hope the visitor appreciates not just the natural beauty of the California areas to which we have been, but in some small way participates with us in the experience as well. We spend several weekends in Pismo Beach each year, so much of our hiking takes place on the Central Coast. We also like camping in the Sierras, so we've done several trips along the Great Western Divide and the Kern Plateau. Additionally, we have done a group hike (known as Chris and Jane's Excellent Adventure) with family and friends each Labor Day since 2009 - these trips are included in their own page. Finally, we recently purchased a cabin in Wrightwood, so many of our latest hikes have been in the eastern San Gabriel mountains. Enjoy the site!
