Our various adventures on California trails (and elsewhere)

On the way out of the Gaviota Peak parking lot, we thought we should make a short detour to visit nearby Nojoqui Falls, an 80-foot waterfall that looked impressive enough to warrant the short 0.6 mile hike to see it. We found the trailhead easily enough, located a couple of miles east of Hwy 101…

Wow, what a day!  Gaviota Peak had been on our to-do list for some time, and we decided it was time to make the one-hour drive down from Pismo to take it on.  The peak itself is the westernmost summit of a long ridge towering over Hwy 101 along the coast west of Santa…

Expecting to hike Gaviota Peak near Santa Barbara tomorrow, we were looking for something a little longer than yesterday’s 2.8 miles but not something too strenuous – we settled on the Mariposa Trail in the Irish Hills south of San Luis Obispo, from which we could reach a summit called Morro View that would…

While staying for President’s Day week in Pismo Beach, we decided to finally get some hiking in.  Jane got some new boots, so we decided to keep things simple and short the first time out so she could break them in.  South of the city of Los Osos is the Morro Dunes Ecological Reserve,…

We had had to postpone our annual Labor Day hike due to our daughter, Chelsea’s, pending labor of her own, but we still managed to get over to Pismo for a few days later that week. We had been contemplating a number of hiking options in the area and, having driven down south to Solvang…

In a residential neighborhood, just south of downtown San Luis Obispo, is the trailhead for South Hills Open Space. We had stopped by this curbside trailhead once before a few months earlier, deciding that the trail didn’t look too appealing at the time. After our brief hike up Black Hill in Morro Bay, we…

Just east of the town of Morro Bay sits Black Hill, one of the Nine Sisters that stretch from Morro Rock in the west to Islay Hill east of San Luis Obispo. We had heard that the hike to the top was scenic but very short – it could be lengthened to about a…

Jane’s Aunt Bev met us for an easy walk along the bluffs north of Cayucos. Chris was hoping to duplicate the hike we did last November but mistook the trailhead and wound up parking about two miles short of where he intended. We ended up walking south from Hwy 1 at San Geronimo Road to the…

Jane was shopping when Chris did Islay Hill alone the previous November, so we did this easy but scenic little hike together on a beautiful January day. The colors of farmland in Edna Valley to the east weren’t quite as vibrant as they had been in the fall, but the air was crystal clear….

A beautiful, cloudless day in Montana de Oro State Park, and our destination was 1,373′ Oats Peak. We hiked up the south side of the Islay Creek canyon to a saddle just east of Valencia Peak, thinking the next hill was Oats Peak. To our surprise, Oats was three small summits and another 3/4 mile away…

Over the last few years, we have discovered - or really, re-discovered - our common love of hiking. Although we typically enjoy the proverbial mountaintop experience and the sense of accomplishment that comes with reaching some summit or another, we sometimes prefer easier trips that are less taxing. In any case, we hope the visitor appreciates not just the natural beauty of the California areas to which we have been, but in some small way participates with us in the experience as well. We spend several weekends in Pismo Beach each year, so much of our hiking takes place on the Central Coast. We also like camping in the Sierras, so we've done several trips along the Great Western Divide and the Kern Plateau. Additionally, we have done a group hike (known as Chris and Jane's Excellent Adventure) with family and friends each Labor Day since 2009 - these trips are included in their own page. Finally, we recently purchased a cabin in Wrightwood, so many of our latest hikes have been in the eastern San Gabriel mountains. Enjoy the site!
