We got up feeling sore, but we were both happy to have worked our tired muscles walking up to Ribbon Falls the day before – even more so were we thankful for our cozy cabin, as the rain had continued to fall steadily through the night. For the second day in a row, ours…

After a mostly-sleepless night in our tent, we showed up for breakfast at Phantom Ranch thinking that we’d perhaps get lucky – we had inquired the night before if any cabin space was available, and they told us it was possible for our second night but they wouldn’t know until morning. So, we were…

Several months ago, we responded to an invitation for a long weekend at a golf resort in Scottsdale, AZ, and, while contemplating the various things we’d want to do in Arizona, decided to try and add a Grand Canyon visit to the itinerary. Looking first into backcountry permits, we were surprised to find that…

The Arredondos and Ammeraals were with us for the balance of Thanksgiving weekend in Wrightwood, and Sunday’s plan called for a visit with the kids to Grassy Hollow and a hike of undetermined length along the PCT. Once we got to the first open views west from the trail to Mt. Baden-Powell, Chris suggested…

After yesterday’s hike over Throop Peak to Mt. Hawkins and back, we were looking Sunday for something a little lower impact on our sore muscles – Cynthia hadn’t yet been to the Grassy Hollow visitor center, so we dropped into the facility at about 10am before heading west on the PCT. We’ve hiked this…

Having been to Throop Peak twice before, we’re quite familiar with the trail ascending the mountain’s north ridge from Dawson Saddle. Cynthia was with us for the weekend in Wrightwood, and we figured the moderate climb would be just the ticket to get her four miles closer to sixty while allowing Jane to gather…

So, this hike (if we can even call it that) was a total wimp-out. After leaving the Marvin Pass TH, we picked our way back to General’s Highway, starting to get nervous about having enough fuel in the Jeep to get down to Three Rivers, some 70 road miles away. We knew there was…

Like on Saturday, we awoke to a cool and shady morning, and we ate our sumptuous breakfast looking west over the Horse Corral Creek drainage, spying on the far ridge the lone sequoia one can see from the camp. We had lost some sleep during the night due to some rustling sounds Jane thought…

So, one of the recommended hikes out of Sequoia High Sierra Camp (SHSC) is a one-way excursion from the camp into Kings Canyon – the camp notes what time your party leaves in the morning and sends a car to pick you up at Cedar Grove some 5-6 hours later to bring you back….

After our High Sierra Camp loop hike in Yosemite last summer, we immediately made plans to return this year, expecting to do a shorter trip with one night at Glen Aulin followed by two at May Lake (with a Mt. Hoffman summit hike planned for Day 3). We did the whole lottery thing, being…

Over the last few years, we have discovered - or really, re-discovered - our common love of hiking. Although we typically enjoy the proverbial mountaintop experience and the sense of accomplishment that comes with reaching some summit or another, we sometimes prefer easier trips that are less taxing. In any case, we hope the visitor appreciates not just the natural beauty of the California areas to which we have been, but in some small way participates with us in the experience as well. We spend several weekends in Pismo Beach each year, so much of our hiking takes place on the Central Coast. We also like camping in the Sierras, so we've done several trips along the Great Western Divide and the Kern Plateau. Additionally, we have done a group hike (known as Chris and Jane's Excellent Adventure) with family and friends each Labor Day since 2009 - these trips are included in their own page. Finally, we recently purchased a cabin in Wrightwood, so many of our latest hikes have been in the eastern San Gabriel mountains. Enjoy the site!
