While Chelsea stayed at the cabin for some quiet time, we took the boys on another hike, this time up the Blue Ridge trail near Big Pines and the Mountain High ski resorts. From our two previous visits here, we recalled a trailside bench halfway up the route, a mile from both the trailhead…

One of the long-standing Wrightwood traditions is having garage sales on Memorial Day weekend, such that people come from all over to shop for treasures at several hundred simultaneous yard sales. While Jane and Chelsea ventured out with the crowds, Chris took all three boys on a hike. The plan was to start at…

We had all three boys with us in Wrightwood for a couple of days before Easter, and we had promised to take them on a hike. One destination that’s popular with locals (although not well-publicized officially, which is probably a good thing) is a small historic cabin on the east flank of Mt. Baden-Powell….

April 2, 2017 – Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve (2x)

April 19, 2017 Chris Comments 0 Comment

We left Yucca Valley shortly past noon, and Google Maps called out nearly 3 hours travel time from there to the Poppy Reserve located west of Lancaster – we figured this was an inaccurate estimate based on some system glitch but blindly chose to follow the directions provided, routing us first northwest around Victorville before…

Up early this Sunday morning, we decided to visit the park’s extreme western end and take in some final sights before heading for home.  We originally had on our radar a steep-ish hike to Warren Peak, a prominent summit that dominates this area, but, wanting now to save some miles for an alternate stop at…

Since we wanted to get back and have time to explore Joshua Tree town, we decided to do one more short hike today before leaving the park.  The Hidden Valley day use area is one of the places we had visited with the Arredondos in 2014 – we knew there was a nature trail…

From the eastern limit of our Joshua Tree excursions at Cholla Garden, we headed back west to the main park road and followed that a short distance further west to the Split Rock picnic area, located about half a mile north of the pavement at the end of a good dirt road.  A 2-mile…

Day 2 of our Joshua Tree adventure began with a visit to Cholla Garden – we drove east through Twenty-Nine Palms before turning south into the park and then southeast into the upper reaches of Pinto Valley. Here, the terrain falls away to the east as the desert transitions from the higher Mojave to…

After returning from Ryan Mountain, we looked around for another short hike to finish off the day before driving back to Joshua Tree town – Skull Rock was nearby to the east, so we headed there to check out the formation and its adjacent 1.7-mile nature trail loop.  We found the trailhead easily enough…

Chris’ cousin Cynthia turned 60 earlier this year, and we generously gifted her with 60 miles of hiking fun with Chris and Jane in 2017 (some gift, right?). At any rate, we had all wanted to get down to Joshua Tree for a few days and see the wildflowers, which we expected to be in…

Over the last few years, we have discovered - or really, re-discovered - our common love of hiking. Although we typically enjoy the proverbial mountaintop experience and the sense of accomplishment that comes with reaching some summit or another, we sometimes prefer easier trips that are less taxing. In any case, we hope the visitor appreciates not just the natural beauty of the California areas to which we have been, but in some small way participates with us in the experience as well. We spend several weekends in Pismo Beach each year, so much of our hiking takes place on the Central Coast. We also like camping in the Sierras, so we've done several trips along the Great Western Divide and the Kern Plateau. Additionally, we have done a group hike (known as Chris and Jane's Excellent Adventure) with family and friends each Labor Day since 2009 - these trips are included in their own page. Finally, we recently purchased a cabin in Wrightwood, so many of our latest hikes have been in the eastern San Gabriel mountains. Enjoy the site!
